Velvet Lane

Nine rooms above a coastal kitchen and a rooftop bar, in a 1930s building off Hill Road.

Bandra West, Mumbai

From ₹9,500 night

A house for the evening

Velvet Lane is a small hotel that keeps restaurant hours.

The building went up in 1937, when this part of Bandra was bungalows and gardens, and we kept what the years left us: the terrazzo floors, the curved balconies and a teak staircase that creaks on the fourth step. Nine rooms sit on the three floors above the restaurant, and the bar is on the roof.

Small plates from the coast

Downstairs, the kitchen cooks the coast from Malvan to Mangalore as small plates to share: prawns in a kokum and coconut curry, crab on buttered pav, and fried fish that is still crackling when it reaches the table. Dinner is from 7 pm until midnight, and hotel guests always get a table.

Questions

Can we eat at the restaurant if we are not staying?

Yes. The restaurant and the rooftop bar are open to everyone. Hotel guests always get a table; everyone else should book ahead on weekends.

Will the bar keep us awake?

The bar is on the roof and the music stops at 11 PM. The guest floors keep quiet hours from then, and the Deco Room, at the back, is the quietest of all.

Is there parking?

We have no parking of our own. There is paid parking on Hill Road, three minutes away, and we are happy to book a car for you.

How do we get here from the airport?

It is about 9 km, or 30 to 50 minutes by car depending on traffic. Tell us your flight time and we can book a car to meet you.

About Velvet Lane

Velvet Lane is a small hotel that keeps restaurant hours. The building went up in 1937, when this part of Bandra was bungalows and gardens, and we kept what the years left us: the terrazzo floors, the curved balconies and a teak staircase that creaks on the fourth step. Nine rooms sit on the three floors above the restaurant, and the bar is on the roof.

Most of our guests come for a night out in Bandra and stay for the quiet that follows. The lane is calm after ten, the rooms are dark and cool, and breakfast is served until noon, because nobody here is in a hurry.

Up on the roof, the bar opens at six. The drinks borrow from the kitchen: kokum, curry leaf, raw mango and plenty of lime.
